TECHNOLOGY TURNS PRINT INTO A PORTAL

JumpTech.com and Symbol Technologies partner to enable newspaper to link to the Internet

2000-4-3 Dagens Nyheter

Sweden's largest morning newspaper, and JumpTech.com have selected Symbol Technologies' range of consumer-oriented scanners to be part of the implementation of the JumpCode™ system within the newspaper. JumpCode™ links - small, standard bar-codes - will be used in the newspaper's articles and advertising, to link readers quickly and easily to related, dynamically-customized content on the internet.

"The JumpCode system, which links the print version of our newspaper to resources on the internet, allows us to use each medium to its best advantage," said Leif Widman, Director of Marketing Research for Dagens Nyheter. "We believe this is the future of print publishing."

Symbol's consumer-oriented scanners include the CyberPen, the CS 2000, and the SPT 1500 built on the Palm platform. Each device is a portable, consumer bar-code scanner that stores the coded information no matter where the reader is (bus, train, plane, ...). Later on, when back home or to the office, the JumpCode™ software takes this data and uses the codes to connect the reader directly to content on the internet whether that content is in the form of text, audio, or video resources. This is far simpler than writing down the URLs and having to type the address into your browser and is much more precise and powerful than search engines.

"The partnership is able to provide an advanced consumer scanning device with internet integrating software; the perfect marriage of technologies for linking the print to the internet," says Michel Jacobeus, VP, Scanning Business development.

Rhys Parry, President and CEO of JumpTech.com, said, "We are very pleased to be working with Dagens Nyheter. They are progressive and use technology very sensibly - both behind the scenes and to serve their readership. This partnership is the first step of our planned presence in Europe and further establishes JumpTech.com as the dominant provider of Print-Internet services to publishers."

JumpTech.com (www.jumptech.com) developed unique technology that "turns print into a portal" and "turns the point of interest into the point-of-sale" by physically linking print and the Internet. Jumptech.com is the leading provider of print-to-Internet technology services to publishers, catalogue merchandisers and e-commerce firms. The company's JumpCode PrintPortal™ system uses bar codes appearing in newspapers, magazines, catalogues, and on product labels to connect precisely and directly to related Web-based resources.
