Symbol Introduces Second Generation Handheld Computer Family Based On Microsoft's Pocket PC Platform

Rugged and Durable Family Delivers Enhanced Performance: A Complete Solution for the Growing Mobile Workforce

Symbol Technologies, Inc. announced today its second generation of Pocket PC-based handheld computers with enhanced performance and capabilities, designed for today's growing mobile workforce. The device features bar code scanning, wireless local area networking (WLAN) or wireless wide area (WWAN) connectivity, empowering mobile workers to execute jobs quickly and efficiently. Highly rugged, it enables the power of Pocket PC to perform in even the most challenging environments.

The is the second handheld computer based on the Microsoft Pocket PC platform introduced in less than a month. Earlier, Symbol announced the , a unique Pocket PC device that features a keyboard for maximum data entry efficiency in different application environments. The also offers WWAN or WLAN communications and advanced bar code scanning.

Symbol, the winner of Microsoft's , is the global leader for key and pen-based mobile computing devices for vertical application markets. In 2000, Symbol introduced the first rugged Pocket PC mobile computing device for vertical markets, the . Customers currently using Symbol Pocket PC devices include , and the New Jersey Office of Courts, among others.

The new features an Intel Strong Arm SA 1100 Processor @ 206 MHz, an enhanced 1/4 VGA display, and 32 MB RAM/32 MB ROM. The multi-functional PPT 2800 is sealed to IP54 standards for protection against windblown rain and dust, and withstands multiple drops to concrete up to four feet.
