Symbol and e-Mobilis provide coffee delivery company with a sophisticated mobile computing solution

2001-5-23 HOLTSVILLE, N.Y.

Symbol Technologies, a global leader in mobile computing devices, e-Mobilis, a software mobility solution provider in Tel Aviv and Dimex Systems Ltd (Symbol's business partner in Israel) today announce that Normat, Illy supplier in Israel has implemented the latest mobile computing solution for the . It is expected to revolutionise the industry, making way for an estimated revenue increase of 10% per annum by cutting costs, saving time and eliminating wastage.

With ever increasing pressures to move away from paper-centric work environments, Normat, a coffee delivery services company in Tel Aviv, are currently conducting the first pilot test of this mobile computing solution. If the test proves successful they are expected to see the number of orders taken substantially increase and the solution rolled out to Normat's parent company, the Norfolk Group, a $100 million food services industry that supplies airports, military and many businesses throughout Israel.

Normat now uses Symbol's wireless WAN (Wide Area Network) handheld computers and the e-Mobilis solution to allow delivery men to receive customer orders on their Symbol handheld computers automatically from the corporate Information System. The Mobility Solution is a platform for accelerating mobile application, extending corporate applications to the mobile user. This innovative solution eliminates the complexities of wireless communications, leaving businesses free to concentrate on their core competencies.

When deliveries are now made the customer signs the invoice on the computer screen and new orders are also completed on Symbol's handheld computer. The invoices are automatically submitted to Normat's server without requiring the deliverymen to waste valuable time synchronising their computers.

"Previously, customers had to sign paper invoices. The deliverymen had to fill out orders for fresh supplies on paper forms and had to call every morning to collect the orders. As a result, we were losing as many as 15 orders a month," explains Normat manager, Udi Klier.

John Pellaumail, Symbol's area director, Mediterranean Region commented, "The new system will not only help keep existing customers happy by ensuring that orders do not go astray but the efficiency of the system will create capacity for an increase in customers. We see this as a continued trend in companies creating more effective and efficient use of wireless solutions which can be easily rolled out by other companies across Europe."

"We are pleased to be working in partnership with Symbol Technologies, to provide e-Mobilis with an advanced solution. This is another shining example of mobile commerce in action," says Yuval Viner, managing director, Dimex Systems Ltd.

With large numbers of paper orders being lost, security has become a key feature of the new mobile solution. It is ensured in two ways:

  • Users in the field log onto MobiliServer to seamlessly access their company's Information System. The Mobility Solution does not depend on the availability of a continuous and uninterrupted wireless link, but rather provides a robust and accelerated working environment regardless of connectivity. If the connection is lost, newly entered data is stored on Symbol's handheld device until the connection can be re-established and the data automatically submitted to the MobiliServer.
  • MobiliServer uses SSL (secure sockets layer), which incorporates features that ensure accurate data delivery and secure transmission. Once connection is re-established, the system can resolve conflicts between the data on the remote device and the Information System data.

"Handheld computers and our mobility solutions can be applied in a variety of applications, not just for delivery, but also for sales, field service and emergency services. We are working with Symbol to develop these applications," says Dan Inbar, CEO of e-Mobilis.
